Facebook Pumps Up The Volume

In Facebook’s never-ending quest to get you to stay on its site even longer, the site has rolled out a new feature for music services on the social networking site. Now, when those music statuses appear on your newsfeed, clicking on their name will pop up a window with a button to “Listen With” that friend. Making it even more fun, you’ll start the music at the exact same point, essentially allowing your friend to play DJ.

The listen feature will works in both individual and group settings. Those friends listening to music will show a music note beside their name. Initially Spotify, Mog, and Rdio are supported, although Facebook says other services are on their way.

Making it a more social experience, those who also click the “Listen” button will be added into a group chat where everyone can discuss what they’re listening to. Of course there are privacy concerns, and Facebook has provided instructions to control that if you so desire.

Facebook doesn’t yet allow you to switch DJs like Turntable.fm allows. I’m willing to bet that the feature will come soon if Facebook is truly is serious about competing with already existing services, however.

    Nice idea, but do many normal people use their computers to listen to music? Hopefully this will work when people are using the mobile apps too otherwise I can't see enough people using it.

    @Marc An artist, I'm not quite sure I qualify as one of the "normal" people ( 😉 ) you referred to, but I *am* one of the "poor and 'starving'" members of my profession's genre. As such, every purchase I make requires considerable forethought.
    LSS: I decided upon a PC & an ISP to give me the "most bang for my buck." Not only are they the *sources* of my entertainment & news (TV sites for both network & cable TV; Torrents for what they don't offer; games to replace what my now outdated X-box can't play… etc.), but the *vehicles* for delivering them, as well.
    IOW: my PC is my household's ULTIMATE multi-tasker. It not only provides my phone service ("magicJack") & income, but also serves as my entire "ENTERTAINMENT CENTER." And by "entertainment center" I am speaking LITERALLY, as it is my television, movie theater, radio, gaming system, etc….
    So, to answer your question, yes, MANY "normal" (& not so normal) people DO use their computers to listen to music~especially those of the poorer variety. (*I was offered a Julliard scholarship for the french horn 30+ years ago, i.e., I AM an audiophile & *do* know "what I'm missing," lest you think otherwise. Sometimes one need do what need be done & I did so… Is only in moments like these, when writing you of it, that I allow myself to remember & suffer the accompanying pangs of remembrance…)
